Considering Effort

Meltdown has begun.

In more ways than one I said to myself after typing that. What a world.

edge of yesterday and today

It's just disappearing, vaporizing. Slowly enough that there isn't even any fog.  Just simply changing.  Another kind of going.  Letting go without the stress of show or worry I mumble to myself.

old tree

This fallen tree has been there for years now. Tree guy came the first year we were here, very carefully propped it up on  a  few pieces he cut from one end.  Keep it from rotting he said.  I'll get it next time.  He also cut a few slices.  The man made a small table top from one.

He never came back to cut it.  It hasn't rotted.  It makes a nice bench.  Today I notice that line of snow.  How it highlights the resting.  And then how much I learn about people based on where they put their effort.

rooted in kndness

I was going to weave something at the base of the Tree of Light.  But I simply ended up adding a bit of thread fringe.  Some old magical ikat thread that was gifted to me many years ago.  It's good, although I still imagine the weaving in my mind.  Something is bound to come of it.

expanding a thought

The Newness symbol is evolving, because I keep thinking it can be applied in so many ways.  I took a little time to play with it yesterday, it's simple but slow and I am practicing working on one layer which has indeed proven to be less stable in my hands.

I am thinking these might be nice centers for cabins or nines, maybe I will try.

meaning

wind dancing

Straying in the Wind  became a bit tapestry like.  Because that is what happens with clothwork  if I keep going. in time

I split the heart open,  because, well, at this point in time, why not?  Maybe it is just for some fresh air.  She kind of became like a tree, didn't she?   And more liquid, like the wind that blows though her.  Still standing and letting go at the same time.  Dancing is like that.

  1. I love the crease in her skirt as she leans. I appreciate the forgetting where I was going in pieces, too. Reminds me that there are so many possible stories in everything.

  2. The newness symbol…one that can land anywhere and enhance what is happening. The log story has me thinking of the children’s book “Log Hotel” 🙂
I love how the ‘snow line’ in life moved into cloth work so gracefully. Straying in the Wind is such a beautiful being…with her heart opened (gently or not) and her roots holding her firmly in place. The snow lines adding such a nice touch of light. Touch of light. It’s funny, I was just looking at a pic of my hearts sampler from Whispering Hearts days…and I can still remember, feel why I ripped open one of the hearts. Funny how some things of so long ago can still stand today.

      anything can become new right?
      oh, log hotel! yes!
whispering hearts, wow, so good to remember those days…and here we are still standing.

so love this tapestry effect. how cloth softens over time. the comfort of worn, faded quilts. fabrics telling stories from long ago. becoming more beauty-full as they age. like us!

Oh, Jude! She is stunningly beautiful! I think it is such a gift that you have all of your older pieces to work with . . . rich material from the past, remembered or not. The older I get, the more love & respect I have for my stash. Tapestry, yes! I’m learning to weave simple tapestry this winter, using no sketches or patterns. Just picking colors and starting to weave, to see what comes out. It is so joyful & freeing. Love your work, thanks so much for sharing your beautiful pieces & thoughts!

we are almost what we have gathered. I think that is why I invented basket self.
The looms are sitting here. I think the warmer weather will bring change.

Noticed that downed tree snow line right away, as well as the light line on the edges of the trees in “Straying With The Wind”– love the leafy fingers!
Coming back to, and adding to cloth, making it “tapestry-like” feels very much like doodling to me; refining and refining, adding and adding — little details here and there, the embellishments that add depth and richness to the overall work.
    Love it!
Thank you for your thoughts today💟

I doodle in quick spurts. But then lately I find myself layering day upon day like cloth. they are merging, paper and cloth, but it is very slow.

The Newness symbol is wonderful. Molecules, snowflakes, vectors all come to mind.
As for “dead” trees– I am learning that they are just a different phase of life and as they “rot” they support all sorts of new life. People in native plant circles encourage leaving logs in the garden and letting nature take its course. A rotting log will support fungi, lichen, insects and other invertebrates. Those will become food for birds and mammals. It can become shelter, as it softens. And when it falls apart it becomes soil. I have this book on hold at the library so I can learn more: https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Wood-Afterlife-Ellen-Wohl/dp/0870715275 Thanks for sharing your hand work and your thoughts. Inspiring and peaceful at the same time.

ha, yes, we have acres of rotting wood here, the original plan was firewood, but now we have a nice bench to sit on and watch all the dead trees do their thing.
I am glad there can be some peace here in addition to inspiration.

Good morning! I love Woods that have been kissed by Snow…
Straying in the Wind captures my imagination! I just want to study her, read her thoughts …be with her awhile..

I was struck by your words re Straying in the Wind; how standing and letting go is like dance. I think of standing and the fluidity of effort to let go, sometimes they happen all on their own, other times, effort nudges the action. Effort slipped into a cloth that I started last year and then tucked into my reed basket, strips pinned, not a single stitch undertaken, cloth patches, taken out, re=pinned, discarded… Why? what came to me was that the name I had given this cloth, was a stumbling block. I had named the cloth ” Into the Depths”; my cloths usually suggest their name but this was not working…

This morning as I danced and chanted to “Ritual”, one of my Gabrielle Roth CD’s, it clicked. Gabrielle once said, , “Turn you suffering into Art, and your Art into awareness and turn you awareness into Action” …AND I stopped, frozen in place and then exhaled and felt quite a release: Took out the cloth that had been quietly in my reed basket, re-pinned a few pieces and there was harmony and the name changed from “Into the Depths” to “Into the Grounded Mystic”.. See you can have both, a grounding and a spirit filled path to creating. Come to think of it, this idea of grounding and spirit is has value as a way to navigate the coming political landscape!

  9. Straying in the Wind is beyond beautiful! What an amazingly rich image! I love the movement & her openness — open heart, dangling roots. And steady — blown & bent but still firmly grounded. Such a wonderful reassurance in these times! I needed this. Thank you, Jude.
