Tree of Diversity

A new tree.  A Free Tree. Rainbow fruit.

Also,  some new loose dyed tree components in the ThreadCrumbs shop.  I usually piece the trunks, but a new idea emerged...

  1. Such happy trees! I’m reminded of that old song about the tree in the backyard, being strong enough to bend…(off she goes singing again…)

I was reading Peter Wohlleben’s Secret Life of Trees this morning and was struck by a line in the fungus chapter about the value of diversity. How trees benefit from connecting with multiple types of fungus, how it helps ensure their well-being long term. He commented further how woodlands benefit from having diverse types of trees so should disease hit one type of tree, it doesn’t kill the whole forest and the remaining trees can provide resources for the devastated trees to grow again. Trees can clearly teach us a whole lot about the value of diversity–as so clearly illustrated in your piece.

I think I need to read this book — I love trees! The book description reminds me of the books by Jerry Baker in the 1970s on plants. He wrote about how plants will react to people when they walk by based on how that person has teated them as well and talking to them. For instance, if they randomly pull leaves off the plants will shrink back when that person walks by again.

I will apologize to my plants if I have to pull leaves due to yellowing and talk to them when I water them. Thank you for mentioning the book.
