It’s going…

Today

april showers

Here we are, April, and today it is snowing, will not get above freezing until tomorrow.  Snowing, but going...

mood swings

Yesterday I used my pal here as a model of optimism... WTF, but then hey wait, maybe there's hope!  I've been a bit down but  then there was yesterday... feeling better and warm enough for foraging. There is growing.

Spring has sprung.  It seems there are wild ramps growing everywhere.  Woo hoo! I spotted the beginnings of dandelions,  and plantain.  I think there will be enough wild greens.  And phoebes are building a nest under the porch roof.

Piece by piece the season is being patched together.

I was inspired to fix the lampshade that broke during the move.  I had in mind some kind of fancy collage, which still might happen.  But packing tape was a quick fix, and I kinda like it.  For now good enough which is always beautiful in its usefulness.

It's cold, but there are blankets, and tomorrow.

Wonderful to see soul o and the green growing things.

We have to keep holding the world together one stitch at a time. Grateful for the spring time.

Glad to find you here, I missed this message yesterday I guess. Sorry to hear you have been feeling low, the anniversaries of sad changes are always hard I think. My aunt and uncle foraged ramps, I’ve not been able to find them near me. But we’re nearly in morrel hunting season here and I think I’ve convinced someone to show me some spots. I have a small jar of dandelion capers pickling in the fridge, so good on salads and sprinkled on hummus.

I only pick the morrels although there are many eatable fungus here. I grew up with morrel hunting and am confident about identifying them. My dad used to have a morrel hunting cat. Even better than a truffle pig as he had no interest in eating them.

  3. Been thinking about you. 🙂 Lots of signs of spring here but it is cold too. Good to curl up and be cozy. Cats are so good at teaching that…

Jude~ I woke up thinking about you today and here you are! That first pic of Soul-O…such great stink-eye! haha
It’s nice to see small things growing, giving hope to the days ahead. Be well. Nancy

It lifts the heart to find spring greens growing again. Soul-o is going to love getting to know the world outside the windows. The first spring in a new location is always exciting.. In the low 30’s with sunshine and bursts of snow, not accumulating thank heavens, here in Michigan. I was out checking for spring the other day, and found some in my wooded acres too. Just came inside with Daffodils for the table.

Oh what fun! You are going to be finding so many unexpected things in those woods of yours. Soul-O looks as though he is ready for a trek through the woods with you. I love the lampshade. You could do the whole of it with patches of the original left showing to let some light through the shade.. Just yesterday I was just reading about ramps and thought that I might try to find some little starts of it to get a patch going. Several nurseries have seeds and baeroots of it for sale but alas are all sold out.

    Happy Hunting!

The land and soil here are glorious. Can’t wait to go exploring with my palm.
Seeing through paper is on my mind.
Ramps. Careful harvesting is important for the continuing. I will learn.

Before I read anything, looking at the illumined lampshade, I saw tilting houses/buildings, maybe a street scene. It’s always good to see beautiful Soul-o.

Even though I am probably as far North (Washington state) as you are, it is much milder here. The rain and wind and gray skies are what tend to get me down, but yesterday I foraged for nettles, walked home and made a Spring soup. So good for the soul and the belly! My partner calls it my “witch’s’ brew.” I’m OK with that.

Good to know that you are feeling better and that you land holds treasures for you. Wild garlic growing here and the very old, gnarly apple tree that we thought had given up the ghost, has green leaves and a few blossoms. No one knows what kind of apple tree it is or how old it is . The apples are very small, about 2 inches in diameter with a tinge of sweetness as well as tartness. While it takes forever to peel and slice for apple crisp and applesauce, I have loved doing that every fall.

My mood took an uplift on Saturday with the Hands Off marches. I could not participate but my family in CA did and in New Mexico, 12 cities held marches. In 2017 when I did the Women’s March in Albuquerque, Albuquerque and Santa Fe were the only cities to hold marches… Mind you, I am under no illusion that this will change or fix the ails of this country over night but it is a “shot” in the arm and a message that we mean what we say when we say all hands to the voting booths next year!

Eating what grows within reach is so great. Tiny apples here too. Tart and delicious.
Small resistance here too, not enough to make the news.
      Keep your needle threaded. 🙃

Oh the wonder of Masking Tape! Not just for patching..I love to put a piece of rolled over masking tape to trap all my smidgens of treads.
It keeps my cats for trying to eat them. What is it with cats and spools of thread and strings???
So very glad to receive your message. Stress from daily news has not been reassuring to me at all,
Know we are listening and looking for any note from you! Sending you a warm reminder that we are always thinking of you!

Using what’s on hand to solve a problem is always satisfying. The news is so toxic. Let’s just listen to the wind.

Hi Jude, we have the snow too in eastern Canada, gads it feels colder just cause the calendar says April and the little buds of things were getting so perky. The dog loved her snowy walk though and although the ocean looked nasty, the air was clean (I think). I like the packing tape lampshade! You’ve inspired me, again and still. I’ll be thinking of you and Soul-o snuggled as I have a cuppa with my own snugglers. It’s bleak but it’s going to turn around. We can do this. All of us and each of us. Sending love and hugs.

I think it’s normal to see snow here even in May. It’s a Rollercoaster. I l8ve fixing things and making do. When I turned on the lamp, I smiled. OK. Yes, we can weather the storm(s).

  12. Helen Lee

Glad to see you and Soul-O….he’s so handsome.
Yay for wild greens on your doorstep.
    Here’s to blankets aplenty…and a warmer tomorrow.
    Love to you two 💙

Oh! I have allowed some medicinal herbs to grow in my Gardens this year…Nice to hear from you and your tuxedoed Soul-o!

  14. Lou

Sending love Jude.. Growing, and before it was visible above, it was happening below in the darkest depths of nothing. That’s something I need to remember too. Not always visible but there’s always movement and growth afoot. I like your new model, who appears to be quite willing! Spring has sprung here, with global warming, it will be gone in a flash. Notice and seize the good as it happens and don’t delay is my present phrase!
