What’s needed

Good Morning.

At least here. A bit chilly again but not cold enough to keep things from growing. The stove broke down yesterday.  I had this single burner hot plate thing for dyeing.  Never used it much.  Just fine.  I am not buying a new stove for now.  Let's see really.

good enough

I am spending less money on "things" for reasons that might become apparent later, but I am spending  more time, on paper it seems. But really, at the same time I am considering cloth.  The two mediums that my story depends on.

I got new glasses, What has it been? 15 years?  Anyway I need them to see better because even more than stitching, my painting work requires a lot of detail.  At least I am working on getting back there. Weirdly though, they, the new glasses,  seem to have helped me with another kind of seeing.  But I am still processing that.  A long with, again, the square. The basis of my patchwork.

I removed the background just to make the box more apparent.

Perhaps full circle for me is both paper and cloth. I began a segment called Cloth to Paper (C2P) in the Forever Zone when I was engaged in that a while back.  There was some interruption.   If you have access to the Zone from way back, you might remember.  If you just signed up (thank you!) you will find  it listed in the available old content.  For review.  As I begin again in May, I will be back to the relationship between these two forms  because really, as it relates to story, for me... they ARE one.

Huge fear have to light a pilot in a propane stove, (blow me to smithereens) accepted a full size toaster oven, even dehydrates. But the range another beast! Love the paper cloth connection, remembering your scrap collection. Just perusing mine, recalling, feeling, wishing.

This house was set up for gas appliances but the previous owner switched everything to electric, she was very scared of gas, The old connection are still there.
I have boxes of paper out here, slowly enjoying the sort.

And now the scene has a story.
Chard — my favorite! Picking beet greens out of the compost pile today.
Maybe you can find someone to barter fixing the stove. I used to use the oven daily but now hardly ever. Being diabetic means no baked goods. Life is not fair.

I get most of my tomato starts from the compost now.
      I think I found a used one… but practically unused. we’ll see
My dad was diabetic, I remember…

My sympathy on the non-working stove but it can be surprising what we can live just fine without. When our fairly new microwave suddenly died, we didn’t replace it. Yes, it was convenient but we can heat things perfectly well without it. The same way as when we were growing up. Simplifying can call for creative solutions but there’s no shame in that, especially when the budget isn’t limitless. I’m always inspired when I come here, Jude. Thank you for that.

I’ve tried cloth and paper combos, derivatives also. Drawn to both. I’ve made cloth books and tried paper into fabric, drawn on fabric, whatever. There are limitations and possibilities.

  5. Remembering the first time I got glasses, mid 20s… Had no idea that things weren’t supposed to just get blurrier the further away they were. Weirdly, it was kind of sad to lose that. Lovely painting. “Story” is often floating in front of and connecting most things for me.

Ha, yes, but I am enjoying seeing the turkeys beyond the stone wall, deep in the woods, for a change. They stopped coming close because of the cat. Story has become more of the present moment lately. It’s like gathering fruits in a basket…

glasses that help with another kind of seeing… sounds like a storybook for bruno one day. just realized how much i like seeing shapes move past the edges, whether with cloth or paper…

Love the lil 9 patch within the box 🙂
Spending less makes me happy. I’m in such a use it up or get rid of it mode (always). Last night I pulled out an old spiral notebook from the little shoebox tub of such things. It was from when my son was a boy. It will become the ‘scratch paper’ while making calls – til it’s used up, then I’ll pull out another one and so on.
What does it say about me that this makes me so happy?
Look forward to more of your paper2cloth or cloth2paper.

On taco night I use all four burners. But if I wasn’t still feeding a family, even a small three, sometimes four person one, then I could probably do with my crock pot and rice cooker pretty well. I would miss an oven. My “mom in law” refuses to cook at all now and only eats prepared meals from the freezer. (there is no law involved but plenty of mothering).

You’ve inspired me to get back to working on paper again. To see if I can work in cloth and paper simultaneously without abandoning one medium over the other. Will see how that goes.

yeah, who you are feeding has a lot to do with what you need. I like to cook on a fairly simple level, my baking is often done in the toaster oven.

Some how i see paperwork as patchwork and my cloth work as illustration. So it is working for me.

  9. The dazzle of chard – a color theory party 😊 Too bad about the stove top, I actually do use several burners at a time, often 3 – grain, vegetables and protein. I’d be bereft without a good stove, as the low-histamine diet requires lots of cooking. I remember cloth to paper.

Beautiful drawing! I love the way the “cut out” version really comes alive. Spending less (simplicity?) is always a good thing. Have a great day, Jude!

  11. I’ve never figured out why 4 burners on a stove were necessary (and probably never have used the back 2 on my stove)…but mostly I don’t cook single ingredients at the same time. I went a year without an oven, that was hard. So excited you are back to the paper and cloth!

yeah, I think appliances need to be rethought. I am entertaining a two burner induction thingie. I don’t cook that much really. And maybe this and a toaster oven will do for a while. I know if I ever sell this place and move I will have to replace the stove. I would like to build and outside oven.
I think your sweet gift nudged my a bit ❤️

These are so so sweet Jude and I can totally relate to you when you say paper and cloth. These two are the perfect combo for me also to express the inner things that need to come out and be shared with the world.

Spending “less” on things I can manage without is a joy to me at 73!
I’m inspired by using the thread and cloth I have also!
